Ancient Odometer

This ancient odometer would drop a pebble into the box for each revolution of the wheel. Multiply the number of pebbles by the circumference of the wheel and you have the distance traveled. With minor enhancements and size reduction with modern materials, this became the common surveyor's wheel.
