Load Locking Ratchet

Load Locking Ratchet

This simple design prevents a rotating gearwheel from spinning in the opposite direction--a particular danger when the wheelo is used for lifting heavy loads. The angled bar that blocks the gear's reverse rotation is called a "pawl." Leonardo described it as a "servant." He designed this device to prevent loads from falling out of his revolving crane.
